The architectural structure and support of clothing can be confusing, and recent inquiries have exposed this issue. Question—What is the difference between interface, lining, lining and underscore?

Answer: All of these terms refer to structural details that are usually invisible when you wear clothes, but they play an important role in maintaining the shape and comfort of the work.

Interfacial connection is a support fabric used in areas that require more stability than the weight of the fabric. For example, you will find collars, cuffs, waistbands, closures (such as buttonholes) and hem interfaces. In tailored clothing, you may find interfaces under the entire clothing section, and more than one type of interface is used in a single clothing.

The lining is used to help hide the internal structural details of the clothes, and it can also help it slip easily on other clothes. The lining fabric is usually smooth and silky, although other types of effects can also be used. The lining is constructed separately from the clothes, and is fixed to the facing or hem area by hand or machine.

Interlining is the fabric that is added to the clothes when more warmth is needed, like in winter coats. It can be a heavy fabric with cotton wool, or a lighter fabric, such as flannel or wool. The lining can be constructed separately from the actual garment (sometimes it can be moved), or it can be used as a lining.

Underline is a fabric added to fashion fabrics to increase body and/or opacity. It is a separate layer, attached to the opposite side of the corresponding garment fabric part, and then treated as a layer during the construction process. The pattern mark is often transferred to the underline to avoid revealing the mark on the clothing fabric.
